Running without a cause

By CLINT FOSTER

For the second consecutive month, the Mineral Wells Police Department cuffed a man for evading arrest, who ran for no reason other than an assumption that he had a warrant, according to a police narrative.

According to MWPD, an officer observed a man, later identified as 35-year-old Ricky Ray Sampley, riding a bicycle north on N.E. 7th Avenue, just before 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 24. After watching Sampley run a red light at the intersection of East Hubbard Street and noticing that his bike did not have any discernible forms of lighting for this late-night ride, the officer decided to pull him over.

Police said the officer flashed his lights several times to get Sampley to pull over, but the night rider continued north, ignoring the signals. The officer pulled up next to Sampley, rolled down his window and ordered him to stop, at which point Sampley pulled into a driveway in the 200 block of N.E. 7th.

According to the MWPD case narrative, the officer got out of his car to talk to Sampley and ask him why he refused to pull over. Sampley retorted that the house they were in front of was his mother’s and he was simply trying to get there. Police said before the officer could say another word, Sampley took off running north, leaving his bike behind.

The officer chased Sampley as he looped around the residence twice, sprinted east on N.E. 2nd Street and hung a right on N.E. 9th Avenue before circling the first building at the corner of N.E. 2nd and N.E. 9th and stopping in the backyard. All the while, as the officer pursued, he continually warned Sampley, ordering him to stop multiple times, according to the narrative. One might envision the famous “Yakety Sax” song from The Benny Hill Show playing in the background as Sampley led the officer on his convoluted trail of loopty loops through the neighborhood.
