Medal of Honor Memorial dedication set March 23rd

Special to the Index

Fort Wolters Gate Committee members are proud to announce that March 23 will be the date for dedication of the Medal of Honor Memorial being built at the triangle park north of the Wolters Industrial Park entrance named "Fort Wolters Historical Park."

This project has been two years in the making. Dr. Ronny Collins was inspired to research historical records to see how many Medal of Honor recipients received military training either at Camp Wolters during WWII or Fort Wolters during the Vietnam War era. Mary Creighton and the state historical marker committee of 1996 and 1998 were able to locate two service men when applying for two state historical markers for "Old'' Camp Wolters and for Fort Wolters.

Dr. Collins found 10 more rather quickly; but the 13th came as members of the Vietnam War Museum heard of the results. Thirteen recipients were recognized last March.

About three months ago, another recipient was located by the museum group. This added up to a total of 14 recipients who received the Medal of Honor.

An update will be made to the Camp Wolters Historical Park this spring. A date for this ceremony has not yet been set. However, plans have been to hold a dedication ceremony at Fort Wolters Historical Park marking the completion of the memorial and more additions to the park on March 23.

This ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend. There will be several guests to include possible Medal of Honor recipients still living. Today there are two.

Fort Wolters Gate Committee has been committed to this project and has been supported by many individuals and groups by financial donations and in-kind donations. This project's value was more than $38,000. Some of the larger donors were the Carl E. Kessler Family Foundation, The Clarcor Foundation, North Texas Pressure Vessels, Del Belanger, Brazos Foundation of Mineral Wells, Daughters of the Confederacy Chapter of Weatherford. Other great supporters have been Rotary Club of Mineral Wells, Col. Willie H. Casper, Chicken Express and many others.

Fort Wolters Gate Committee would like to thank all those who have helped in so many ways in getting this memorial and park completed.

More information will be given about the project donors as we get closer to the dedication. Make plans to attend the Medal of Honor Memorial Dedication on March 23 starting at 10 a.m. at Fort Wolters Historical Park, inside Wolters Industrial Complex.
