Friends book sale and raffle planned

By Michele Nations

The Friends of the Boyce Ditto Library (FOBDL) have a large book sale planned for this week. The Friends, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) corporation, funnels donations of books, time, money, grants, memorials and dues to be used for library enhancements above and beyond the budget supplied by the city.

The benefits include new children’s books and summer reading program events. The Friends also support the library by paying for movie licenses, allowing movies such as Dark Shadows, Rock of Ages, and Madagascar 3, to be shown on Friday afternoons and at special times. Popcorn is provided, but people have to bring their own drinks and snacks.

With the help of a grant from the Brazos Foundation, the Friends were able to give the library a digital work station consisting of a beautiful wooden cabinet with an imaging machine system, which includes a camera, scanner, viewer and computer. This system allows a person to view and capture images from various venues, such as, but not limited to, microfilm, 35 millimeter slides and photographs.

The FOBDL has also provided funds or volunteer time for school yearbook scanning, newspaper microfilming, preservation of archival material, the University of North Texas’ Portal to Texas History, Summer Reading Program, cultural programs (ex., Riders on the Orphan Train, Alison Moore and Phil Lancaster), book signings (ex., The Oldest Profession in Texas, James Pylant and Sherri Knight), mystery dinners (social) and the acquisition of books to enhance the existing library collection.

We have also added an audio-visual system, which was partially funded by the Brazos Foundation, in the community room.  We are always looking for other new ways and things to do to help the FOBDL grow and provide even more support for the library.

One opportunity is to sell raffle tickets for an iPad that will allow library patrons to read digital books. Tickets are available from members of the Friends of the Library (FOL) and the Boyce Ditto Public Library (2300 SE Martin Luther King Junior Street) for the Apple iPad mini with the
