WHITT - A shooting near Whitt Sunday involving a 12-year-old boy was found to be accidental, according to the Parker County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched to the 1700 block of Hardy Road around 6 p.m. to collect evidence after the boy was taken to Palo Pinto General Hospital in Mineral Wells for an injury to his right ankle, according to PCSO Deputy Danie Huffman.

The boy was reportedly transported to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth from PPGH and the bullet was surgically removed.

Two boys, believed to be brothers, were behind the house, apparently hunting squirrels, when the 10-year-old handed the older boy a loaded .22-caliber rifle, Huffman said.

The 12-year-old shot himself in the foot and right ankle area, the sheriff’s office reported.

The father was reported to be at work at the time, according to Huffman.

Deputies collected the rifle from the home during their investigation and the incident was later cleared as

an accident.
