AUSTIN — Gordon High School hurdler Amber Elkins left Saturday’s University Interscholastic League track and field championships with two medals, but neither medal was the color she had hoped to bring home.
Elkins, who won a bronze medal at last year’s state meet as a freshman, earned silver in the Class 1A 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.76 seconds.
The sophomore from Gordon finished the 100-meter hurdles just .02 seconds behind gold medalist Morgan Elkins of Bosqueville High School in a photo finish.
Elkins claimed a bronze in the 300-meter hurdles after posting a time of 47.97 seconds Saturday afternoon.
Ninfa Rios of Runge High School won gold in that event with a time of 46.32 seconds.
“Not too good,” was Elkins’ response when asked how it felt to win silver and bronze at the state meet
Elkins improved on her 100 hurdles time from the state qualifying meet, 15.24 seconds, by nearly one-half second.
However, she was unable to improve on her 300 hurdles time of 46.22 seconds.
After receiving her bronze medal and posing for photos, a disappointed Elkins jerked the third-place medal off over her head.
However, despite being the only female athlete to qualify for state from Gordon, her performances gave Gordon an overall 13th place finish in the team standings with 14 points.
Rebecca Singleton of Perrin-Whitt High School finished fifth in the Class 1A girls triple jump with a leap of 34-11, which was five inches longer than her best leap at the regional meet. Sudan’s Brittany Williams won the event with a distance of 37 feet, 7 inches.
