Greyhounds set for sixman state-title run

STRAWN — This summer’s Dave Campbell’s Texas Football picks the Strawn Greyhounds to win the Sixman Division I District 10 championship.

The Greyhounds and their fans have bigger plans and higher hopes.

Coach DeWayne Lee’s Greyhounds football team had a 6-5 record last year and finished in second place in district play with a 5-1 record.

When Lee arrived at Strawn High School in 2003, Strawn defeated Fort Davis High School in state title play at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa.

The players, coaches and fans from Strawn know winning another state championship is not out of the question.

The Strawn Greyhounds have high hopes this fall with six returning starters on each side of the line of scrimmage.

Lee’s Greyhounds lost just three players to graduation and have nine returning lettermen.

Senior Jonathon Lindsey is at the heart of the team.

Lindsey, a 6-2, 200-pound senior, was an all-state selection last year at nose guard. Lindsey ended his junior year by winning the Class 1A state championship in the discus.

Strawn quarterback Christian Johnson and tailback Johny Abbott each were honorable-mention all-state team selections last fall.

Taking the state championship won’t be anywhere near easy.

The Greyhounds will have to beat the tradition-rich Gordon Longhorns in Sixman Division I District 10 play and than find a way to knock off defending state champion Richland Springs in Region III play.

Texas Football ranks Strawn third in the state behind teams from Clavert and Turkey Valley.

The following is a look at Texas Football’s pre-season Sixman Division I Top 10 as well as the publication’s Sixman Division I District 10 rankings:
