Gordon, Strawn set for season openers in Hico

HICO — Two state-ranked sixman football teams from the Mineral Wells area are getting ready to open the 2008 season on Saturday afternoon during the fifth annual Nike-sponsored Sixman Super Saturday.

The third-ranked Strawn Greyhounds are set to play sixth-ranked Follett High School in a 1:30 p.m. game.

The 17th-ranked Gordon High School Longhorns are ready to take on second-ranked Valley High School in a 4 p.m. battle.

Former Dallas Cowboys stars Walt Garrison and Burton Lawless and other former NFL players are set to attend the event.

The Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders will also be featured.

Six time world champion all-round cowboy Cody Ohl is another special guest who will make an appearance at the day-long event in Hico.

Gordon High School head football coach Tye Adams said while he is looking forward to opening the season in Hico, the event has been diluted by a number of other simular events in other cities.

“The best teams in the state used to come to Hico but several other schools are having sixman opening-day events on the same day,” Adams said. “It’s still a good thing that the kids enjoy and are looking forward to. We really like playing down there but it just not the same, it’s not as good as it used to be.”

Here’s a look at the schedule:

Ira vs. Throckmorton at 11 a.m.; Strawn vs. Follett at 1 p.m.; Gordon vs. Valley at 4 p.m.; Iredell vs. Jonesboro at 6:30 p.m. and Abbott vs. Garden City at 8 p.m.
