Wildcats ice Polar Bears

SANTO — Two touchdown passes gave the Santo Wildcats a 12-0 win over the

Frost Polar Bears on Friday in the season opener for each team at W.A. Lewis Field.

Santo receiver Jacob Moore caught touchdown passes of 33 yards and five yards from freshman quarterback Colton Kroll.

The Santo defense shutdown the Frost offense and the Wildcats walked away with the win.

The win equaled Santo’s 2007 win total and put a smile on the face of second-season SHS head football coach Randy Thornton.

Kroll won the starting job at quarterback during two-a-day drills, according to Thornton.

Sophomore Roland Pope started at quarterback for the Wildcats last year and was set to start this year.

But Pope suffered a severe knee injury last spring during a track meet and was expected to sit out the season.

“He’ll (Pope) be back this year but the doctors haven’t released him to play yet,” Thornton said. “He’s kind of week-to-week right now.”

Thornton said winning the season opener was exciting.

“I’m excited. You need to win, it felt good to get the win on Friday. The kids were excited. They worked hard and they played pretty well. It helped give them confidence.” Thornton said. “We want to be better each game and get better each year.“

Thornton said while it was nice to win the season opener, the Wildcats still have a long way to go.

“We’ve got nine games left to play” the Santo coach said. “We’ve got to keep on working and continuing to get better, need to keep improving.”

“Our defense played well as a team and we only had one turnover on offense,” Thornton added.

Notes... The Wildcats are scheduled to return to play on Friday when Santo pays a visit to Era High School.
