Warriors go for third straight in Bridgeport

Bridgeport Hope Christian, this week’s opponent for Mineral Wells Community Christian School, is picked to take the district title while Lucas, Community Christian School and Christian Life battle for runner up.

Hope (3-1) and CCS (2-2) field only one team and have played both varsity and junior varsity teams. They are both playing in a JV district due to the age of their players. CCS has only one player over the age of 15.

The two teams play at 7 p.m. tonight in Bridgeport.

“It is interesting to note that the other three JV teams are under varsity programs that are ranked in the top five of the state for TCAF (Texas Christian Athletic Fellowship) according to sixmanfootball.com,” said CCS Assistant Administrator Doug Jefferson.

TCAF is the varsity organization associated with CSAF (Christian Schools Athletic Fellowship.

“We will be playing varsity football and fielding a junior high football team next season. This season we felt that it was best to play a JV schedule to give our players some experience,” said Jefferson. “We are playing with five players who before this year had never stepped onto a football field. Coach Bryan Horton has a way of taking raw talent and turning out football players and that is why we are 2-2.”

The Warrior’s pre-season schedule included two varsity teams, both which had twice the players as CCS and more experience. The Warriors split these varsity games including a win over the Parker-Tarrant Home School and a hard-fought loss to Weatherford Christian.

The other two pre-district games include a victory over Willow Park Trinity’s JV and a loss to Lucas Christian’s JV. The Warriors will face both of these teams again in district play.

Quarterback and running back Daniel Hollingsworth of CCS is averaging over 200 yards a game and has 13 touchdowns on the season. Colton Mayo is averaging 70 to 90 yards a game and has put up seven touchdowns. Cole Vankirk’s scores add four touchdowns to bring the total touchdowns this season to 24.

In addition the Warriors have scored one field goal and caused one safety. The Warriors are outscoring their opponents 159 to 128 on the season.
