Late run lifts Tison past MWJHS, 34-12

The Mineral Wells Junior High School seventh grade A team can chalk Tuesday’s showdown with Weatherford Tison as one that got away.

Tison scored three times in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter en route to claiming a 34-12 come-from-behind victory. The Rams had led the game until midway through the third quarter.

“We played really hard tonight,” said Mineral Wells Junior High School coach Ryan Thornton. “I’m very proud of our team. We led the entire game until midway through the third.”

The Rams more than held their own early in the contest. Emmanuel Ascencio helped Mineral Wells sprint to a 6-6 tie in the first.

The Rams took the lead in the second quarter when Paiton Struen broke free on a 62-yard touchdown romp.

The Rams, sparked by solid defensive play from Lindy Seigler, Preston Hoskins and Levi Galliher, held a slim 12-6 advantage at the half.

Tison rallied back in the third. Weatherford took advantage of a few missed tackles to scratch out its second touchdown of the contest -- and take a slim 14-12 cushion.

Turnovers proved costly for the Rams in the fourth quarter. Weatherford Tison converted three MWJHS miscues into points and reeled off a 20-0 run.

“In the final three minutes we fumble twice and threw an interception which gave Tison the win,” said Thornton.

In addition to Ascensio and Struen, Mineral Wells also picked up stellar offensive play from Danny Ralls, Sean Burns, Seigler and Marcus Garza.

The Rams, who slipped to 0-4 for the year, are scheduled to return to action on Oct. 14 when they travel to Weatherford to face Hall Junior High.
