AZLE – The Gordon Longhorns scored on eight of their 15 offensive plays Thursday evening and cruised to a laughable 66-0 win over Greenville Phoenix in the area round of the six-man state playoffs.
Just how dominating was Gordon? Consider this: Gordon outgained Greenville Phoenix in total yards by a 281-2 clip and held the Firebirds to minus-22 yards rushing.
With the win, the Longhorns improved to 11-1 for the year and, more importantly, set up a titanic rematch with rival Strawn in the state quarterfinals. Strawn, also 11-1, earned its way into the showdown with a 60-8 win over St. Jo.
Gordon, which scored on all eight of its possessions – and once off a punt return, dominated Greenville Phoenix from the start, outscoring the Firebirds by a 38-0 clip in the first 10 minutes of play.
Ryan Burt ignited the GHS attack, capping the Longhorns first drive with a 3-yard touchdown run just 1:58 into the game.
The news only got worse for Phoenix. One play after Burt’s TD run, the GHS defense forced a fumble. On Gordon’s first play after that, Colt Price hooked up with Jeremy Allen on a 35-yard strike.
Gordon tacked on first-quarter touchdowns by Price, Preston Walters and Daniel Vargas.
Allen all but ended the game just 11 second into the second quarter by returning a punt 37 yards for a touchdown.
Casey Everitt, John Cherry and Michael Spraggins closed out a 28-0 run in the second quarter with touchdowns.
