The best father-son duo in Mineral Wells High School boys track has to be the Hicks.
Father Emanuel set a school record of 47.1 in the 400 meters. The record has stood for 35 years, set in 1979. Hicks also led the Rams 4X400 relay team which set a school record of 3:16.9 that also still stands today.
Son DaShawn Hicks won every 100 meter race last season and qualified for the state track meet.
Due to an injury, Hicks false started in the state finals. He is the favorite to win a state title this season in the 100 meters. Emanuel Hicks was joined by Rex Walker, Jay Morris and Ron Morain in setting the school record in the 4X400 relay. In 1979, Morain set the 800 meter record of 1:53.9. That record also still leads all 800 meter runners after 35 years.
The best brother-sister duo in MWHS track history has to be Jesse Kimbrough and Regina Kimbrough. Jesse set the school record of 10.5 in the 100 meters.
The record stood until Johnnie Smith came along. Regina set the school record in the shot put.
All of this happened in the spring of 1979. These are just a few of the athletes that you will hear about in the “MWHS Team of the Century” to be released starting this month.
