Hicks’ best father/son track superstar duo in MWHS history

Ram Tracking ... By Jerry Hamilton

The best father-son duo in Mineral Wells High School boys track has to be the Hicks.

Father Emanuel set a school record of 47.1 in the 400 meters. The record has stood for 35 years, set in 1979. Hicks also led the Rams 4X400 relay team which set a school record of 3:16.9 that also still stands today.

Son DaShawn Hicks won every 100 meter race last season and qualified for the state track meet.

Due to an injury, Hicks false started in the state finals. He is the favorite to win a state title this season in the 100 meters.  Emanuel  Hicks was joined by Rex Walker, Jay Morris and Ron Morain in setting the school record in the 4X400 relay.  In 1979, Morain set the 800 meter record of 1:53.9. That record also still leads all 800 meter runners after 35 years.

The best brother-sister duo in MWHS track history has to be Jesse Kimbrough and Regina Kimbrough. Jesse set the school record of 10.5 in the 100 meters.

The record stood until Johnnie Smith came along. Regina set the school record in the shot put.

All of this happened in the spring of 1979.  These are just a few of the athletes that you will hear about in the “MWHS Team of the Century” to be released starting this month.

100 years ‘MWHS teams of the century’

This past year was the 100th year of high school sports played at Mineral Wells High School. A “Team of the Century” will be chosen in all-sports at Mineral Wells High School starting in January. There will also be top teams chosen in each sport as well as top performers at each position.

The first team and players to be released will be the MWHS girls golf Team.  The 1984 girls golf team is a cinch to win golf team of the century.  The 1984 team is the only team to win a state team championship in Mineral Wells High School history. Girls golf was started in the late 70’s at Mineral Wells High School.  Within just a few years, they captured a state title.

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

    By CLINT FOSTER

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
