Mineral Wells golfers sweep District 6-3A championships

FORT WORTH – Just call Mineral Wells "Titletown" for golf.

After a nail-biting second round of the District 6-3A Tournament at Glen Garden Country Club in Fort Worth, the Mineral Wells boys and girls golf teams downed Kennedale, Springtown and Castleberry to capture the 2014 district championship, while Scarlett Eaton and Reece Tarver won the individual district championships.

The Lady Rams entered the second round of tournament play trailing rival Springtown by 13 shots for the district lead. But Mineral Wells battled back to a 945 tie to force a playoff that the Lady Rams would win by a single shot.

Key to the Lady Rams' back-to-back district championship run was Eaton, who posted a 91-shot second round to finish with 178 for her second straight girls' individual championship. If Eaton had played with the boys, her 178 would have been good enough for sixth place – one shot out of fifth.

Whitney Ratto and Kaleigh Aaron were named to the All-District 6-3A First Team along with Eaton for their efforts. Both girls significantly improved there scores in the second round to tie at 249. Ratto posted a 115 to add to her first-round 134, while Aaron shot 118 after 131 in the first round.

Kenzi Huseman also powered the winning team effort, shooting a final of 272 after rounds of 147 and 125.

For the Rams, Tarver, Nick Wendt, Conner Bradshaw, Josh Hardee and Aaron Cedillo were forced to engineer a comeback against the Kennedale Wildcats to seize the district title by six shots with a final score of 727.

Head coach Tommy Fincher said it was the first time since 1979 for the Mineral Wells boys golf team to win district, adding another feather in the cap of an already outstanding golf season for Mineral Wells High School, across the board.

Tarver's district medal came after a 163 overall tournament. The one-shot victory came thanks largely to a second round in which he shot a 79 – the best round by any golfer, male or female, in the entire 2014 tournament.

Along with Tarver, Wendt was named to the District 6-3A First Team after shooting rounds of 92 and 85 for a total of 177.

Hardee received second-team all-district honors after shooting a 185, with rounds of 96 and 89.

Every Ram golfer improved their score in the second round. Bradshaw and Cedillo were no exception, bringing their scores out of the triple digits.

Cedillo finished with 202 after shooting 110 in the first round and 92 in the second. Bradshaw shot a 210 and brought his first-round score of 114 down to a 96 in the second round.

The district championships advance both teams to the 1-3A Regional Tournament for the second year in a row. The Rams will tee off at Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock, April 14-15, while the Lady Rams will take the course April 16-17.

"Both teams made it to regionals last year, so they are familiar with the course layout," Fincher said.

Fincher wished to thank Holiday Hills Country Club for their support, specifically head golf professional TJ Burge and Club Manager Aaron Gatlin.
