Area schools all in grid action during ‘zero’ week

By TONY EIERDAM

For those high school football coaches wishing to have an “open” date later on their football schedules, scheduling a game during “zero week” is a necessity.

All six area schools – Community Christian School, Santo, Perrin, Millsap, Gordon and Strawn will open their respective 2013 football seasons this weekend.

Four of the six high school football teams covered by the Index will play on Friday. CCS will face Johnson County Homeschool at 7 p.m. at Miller Stadium; Millsap will host Alvord at 7:30 p.m.; Santo will travel to Ranger with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff; and Perrin is on the road at Meridian, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.

As is their usual custom, state-ranked six man schools Gordon and Strawn are invited to play on “Super Saturday” (Saturday, Aug. 31) in Hico. The annual “Super Saturday” event in Hico is in its 10th consecutive year and is always played during “zero week.”

This year the event will feature four games played in a row beginning with the Longhorns facing Dallas Covenant at 11 a.m. Strawn will play at 3 p.m. against Ira.

Other “Super Saturday” games include Abbott against Valley at 1 p.m. and concludes with Jonesboro against Walnut Springs at 5 p.m.

Santo head coach Randy Thornton lost many seniors from last year, but he will have six games to evaluate his talent before district begins on Oct. 11.

“Our job as a coaching staff is to get this new group of players ready by district,” Thornton said. “But we are in good shape because this group had a productive August and is a very hungry group of players.

“They have been waiting for a long time for this opportunity.”

Millsap head coach Kyle Coker cannot wait to unveil his new offense, the slot T, mainly a running offense. For the past two seasons the Bulldogs have run our of a spread offense.

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

    By CLINT FOSTER

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
