Eleven area athletes earn state academic honors

Nine MWHS athletes, two Perrin volleyball players make all-state, all-academic lists

The Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) and the United States Marine Corp proudly announce the THSCA Academic All-State Football, Volleyball and Cross-Country teams for 2012-13.

The teams are selected by a point system that awards points for GPA, class rank and SAT or ACT score. The student/athletes are then placed on teams according to the number of points they have earned.

Five Rams – Jacoby Prestwood, Sean McGuire, Jarod Lenamon, Travis Mallory and A.J. Williams earned spots on the all-state, all-academic team.

Prestwood was  first-team selection in Class 3A, McGuire is on the second team, while Lenamon, Mallory and Williams earned honorable mentions.

The Texas Girls Coaches Association also released their all-state, all-academic teams.

Requirements include an overall GPA average of 94 or above for grades 9-11; must be a varsity participant or member of the support staff of that sport in good standing; and must be of good moral character.

Earning all-state, academic honors from the Mineral Wells Lady Rams volleyball team were Niya Benavides, Sydney Shelstead, Chandler Ortiz and Miranda Watkins.

Earning all-state, academic honors from the Perrin Lady Pirates volleyball team were Kelsey Hutton and Crystal Crisp.

    The Mineral Wells Rams have climbed another mountain. After besting Kennedale for the first time in over a decade on their home field in the last week of March, the Rams (16-10, 7-2) swept their season series with the vaunted Wildcats, earning a 6-2 win in front of a home crowd, Friday night, to once again put themselves alone atop the District 6-3A standings with one game left to play.

    The Lady Rams wanted this one. Bad. But despite a brilliant defensive effort that kept the game locked at 1-0 until the final frame, the Mineral Wells Lady Rams found themselves so close, yet so far away from a district championship, falling to the second-ranked team in the state, the Kennedale Wildcats, for the second time this year, 3-0, Friday night.

  • 13 Rams, Lady Rams advance to regionals after solid Area Track Meet

    SPRINGTOWN – Track and Field season marches on for the Rams and Lady Rams of Mineral Wells High School, who will send 13 athletes to the Regional Track Meet in Lubbock, April 25-26, after a strong showing at the District 5 and 6-3A Area Track Meet in Springtown, Wednesday.

But despite an energized opponent and a rowdy hometown crowd that lived up to its reputation, the Mineral Wells Lady Rams (24-6, 8-1) made the best of their long-awaited final trip to Springtown and beat the rival Lady Porcupines, 16-5, on senior night, Tuesday.

  • Area baseball, softball: Santo Wildcats begin push for first, Perrin Lady Pirates clinch third place

    As the window of the regular season creeps ever closer to an end, teams all across the state are making the final push for the playoffs with a lucky few in hopes of improving their final playoff seed. Locally, the Santo Wildcats (9-6, 8-3) of the baseball diamond and Perrin-Whitt Lady Pirates (12-7, 6-4) softball team are no exception.
