Playoff-bound Rams conclude 6-3A slate at home

After the Mineral Wells Rams win over Castleberry Friday night coupled with Springtown’s loss to Kennedale the same evening, both the Rams and Porcupines are tied for second place in District 6-3A.

The Rams will attempt to stay in second place when they host Lake Worth at 8 p.m. today on Senior Night at the MWHS gym in the district finale.

Also on Tuesday Springtown plays Castleberry, meaning if the Rams and Porcupines both win there will be a tie for second place. Kennedale, which finishes the season against Diamond Hill, has already clinched the district championship and the league’s top playoff seed.

If MWHS and Springtown finish in a tie for second, the second and third playoff seeds will be determined either by a tiebreaker game between the two teams, or if both coaches agree, a coin flip will determine the second and third playoff seeds from 6-3A.

The Rams, however, are only focusing on the job they have to do to put themselves in position for a second seed. The third seed is an undesirable playoff position as it will have to take on the second seed from District 5-3A, Burkburnett. The Bulldogs handily defeated the Rams earlier in the season, 85-54.

The last time MWHS and Lake Worth met, the Rams started out slowly but rallied to take a 68-54 road win.

“We are assuming Springtown will win, so we have to win (today) so we can play Springtown in a tiebreaker game or flip a coin,” Rams head coach Aaron Pappas said. “To beat Lake Worth we have to stay out of foul trouble like we did (Friday) at Castleberry.

“But if that happens we need our bench players to step up and give us minutes and perform.

“We won’t change our game plan much from the last time we played them.”

Pappas feels the Bullfrogs will use the same defense it did in the earlier meeting.

“We think they may press us a little more than the last time because their press hurt us the first time we played them,” he said. “We have worked on our press breaks in practice, and I feel we are ready.”
