Mineral Wells placed 14 Rams on the All-District 12-4A team, including four superlative awards and seven on the first team, in a vote of league coaches.

Rams senior forward Gilbert Castorena was named as 12-4A’s Offensive Player of the Year; senior Serjio Castillo was selected as the Midfielder of the Year; senior Caleb Bandy was chosen as Goalkeeper of the Year; and sophomore Francisco Rojo was named Offensive Newcomer of the Year.

Castorena scored 11 goals and added six assists in district play, Castillo finished with 11 goals and seven assists, Bandy recorded eight shutouts in 14 matches and allowed just 12 goals for an 0.85 goals against average, and Rojo scored a pair of goals.

“These guys helped us to score 39 goals in 14 matches,” Rams head coach Rolando Borjon said. “Although our entire team contributed to our overall success, these guys played a big role in scoring goals.

“Bandy was excellent in district play and deserved the top ‘keeper award.”

Also earning first-team honors for the Rams were senior defenders Emiliano Silva, Bryan Flores and Dylan Pruitt.

“All three of these guys were a big part of the eight shutouts,” Borjon said. “And another reason we allowed just 12 goals.”

Earning second-team honors from MWHS were senior midfielders Roy Gomez and Eric Parker, senior defender Jose Garcia and sophomore forward Omar Hernandez.

In addition to solid defense, Gomez contributed four assists and Parker added two on offense. Garcia was part of the Rams’ outstanding back line, and Hernandez scored seven goals with three assists.

Rams earning honorable mentions include senior midfielders Adan Ortiz and Gerardo Moya, and sophomore defender Juan Andrade.

Ortiz scored a goal and added two assists, Moya scored a goal and recorded seven assists and Andrade was part of the Rams’ outstanding defenders.

Borjon said the large numbers of Rams on the all-district team represent the kind of successful season the team enjoyed.

“We had a very successful season this year, and it was reflected on the all-district team,” Borjon said. “Our overall record was 11-6-3 and district record 9-4-1 with a third-place finish. “Although we lost in the first round of the playoffs our hard work did not go unnoticed.

“At the district awards meeting we were able to come back with four of the eight major awards.

“Usually, the first and second place teams receive the most votes, but our kids proved themselves this year.

“I am very proud for our kids and our soccer program.

“It will be hard to replace all 11 seniors, but I am confident to say that our younger kids will step up and carry on this success.

“We will accept the challenge.

“I want to thank the 11 seniors for their time, trust, and hard work the last three years.

“These seniors have made history at Mineral Wells High School and will always be remembered for their great success. I really enjoyed every single one of them and I wish them the best of luck in the future.”
