BROWNWOOD – Nearly five Mineral Wells players reached double figures in scoring as the Rams ran past the Brownwood Lions, 72-47, here Friday night in a non-district contest.
The win raises the Rams’ record to 6-4. MWHS will take the UIL’s mandatory five-day holiday break and return to action on Friday at the Bridgeport tournament.
Guards DaShawn Hicks and Biren Clardy each scored 13 points to lead the Rams, with Nick Wendt adding 12 and Mark Glover 10. Broderick Johnson nearly reached double figures as he finished with nine points.
The Rams scored 32 points in the first quarter and led 54-19 at the half.
“Brownwood couldn’t handle our defensive pressure in the first half,” Rams head coach Aaron Pappas said. “We scored a lot of points off easy layups on fast breaks created by turnovers because of our press.
“We did most of our damage in the first quarter and then we kind of held back. Brownwood is a little young and a little down, so we pulled back.
“Our kids played very well, our press worked well for us and it is a good way to go into Christmas break.”
Also scoring for the Rams were Juvaree Sutton with six points, Rascellis Williams with four, Maceo Williams with three and Coy Barrick with two.
The junior varsity Rams defeated Brownwood,55-53, but the MWHS freshman team fell, 65-42.
