BURKBURNETT – Playing in their last non-district basketball games before league play begins on Friday, the Mineral Wells Lady Rams went 1-2 at the Burkburnett tournament with a win over Seymour and losses to Wichita Falls City View and Hereford.
The Lady Rams (4-14) will open District 6-3A play at 6:30 p.m. Friday at home against Castleberry.
Lady Rams sophomore point guard Natalie Ragland was named to the all-tournament team after scoring in double figures in all three games.
Another positive was junior guard Riley Bullock scoring in double figures in two games, including hitting seven three-pointers in the tournament.
Also, the return of senior guard Courtney Peña from injury sparked the Lady Rams’ defense.
But the highlight was a 38-32 win over Seymour. Ragland led the Lady Rams with 11 points, while Ashlynn Robinson added six. But Robinson was injured in this game, and Lady Rams head coach Leslie Holman said the senior post will at least miss Friday’s district opener and possibly more.
“The Seymour game was a big win for us,” Holman said. “It put is in position to play for third place in the tournament.”
The Lady Rams trailed by a point at the half, 23-22, but went on an 8-3 run in the third period and held Seymour off in the fourth to take the victory.
Also scoring were Ashley Valdez with six points, Bullock with five, Peña and Tabby Santibanez, each with four, and Katie Rivera with two.
“In the second half both teams failed to produce much of anything,” Holman said. “It was the second game of the day for both of us and you could sure tell it. However, we were able to pull ahead in the third quarter and held on to win the game. Once again, there was pretty balanced scoring.
Courtney was cleared to play that morning so we got her back for this game.
“However, Ashlynn went down in the second quarter with a sprained ankle and will be out this week. She will miss our first district game with
Castleberry but should be back for Lake Worth (on Jan. 7).
“I was extremely pleased with Ashlynn’s play. She was having a great tournament for us, producing points and rebounds.”
The Lady Rams opened the tournament with a 64-48 loss to Hereford. For the first time this season Bullock led the team in scoring as she poured in 16 points.
“After five days off for Christmas and no practice, we played a pretty good game,” Holman said “In the first half we were able to create a lot of offense and did some things we haven’t done all year.
“We got tired in the fourth quarter as I only had nine girls and Hereford was running 14 in and out the whole game.
“Even though we lost, I was pleased with what we did and was glad to see some scoring from several different players.”
Also scoring were Ragland with 10 points, Robinson with nine, Santibanez and Carson Couger, each with four, Scarlett Eaton with three and Rivera with two.
The Lady Rams fell in the third-place game to City View, 39-37. Bullock led with 13 points while Ragland added 12.
“We played really well the first half and controlled the game pretty well,” Holman said. “It was one of those game where we came out after half time and couldn’t do much of anything. We didn’t score in the third quarter until 1:10 left.
“I was very proud of the kids for battling in the final quarter. We had a final shot with three seconds left and it fell short to tie it up. It was a disappointing loss for us.
“We needed those two wins in a row and a third place finish to take us into district play. We really missed Ashlynn on the boards in this game, but Kera Harrison played in her spot and did a great job for us.”
Also scoring were Peña and Harrison, each with four, and Rivera and Eaton, each with two.
