STEPHENVILLE – Mineral Wells Junior High's cheer squad spent last week at Tarleton State University for the annual National Cheerleaders Association cheer camp and the results were certainly something to cheer about.
From June 16-19, 18 local seventh and eighth graders attended the camp to improve their skills and show they've got what it takes to be among the best cheer squads around as they get older.
Mineral Wells' squad won the spirit stick – given to the most spirited and energetic group daily – three days in a row during the course of a four-day camp. They also took home the first-place trophy from the Champion Chant competition and earned blue ribbons for superiority in all the major cheering areas: motions, voice, memory and overall technique.
The local cheerleaders in attendance included eighth graders Lizette Chavira, Asia Fritts, Alexa Hampton, Paris Perez, Dylan Tincher, Emily Ruelas, Elizabeth Gray, Isis Harley, Makayla Sager and Dru Moses and seventh graders Emma Bullock, Jessie Ishmael, Kelci Baeza, Kaitlyn Chriestenson, Taylor Fewell, Hannah Price, Tayley Valtierra and Lexus Vigil.
Gray, Harley, Sager and Valtierra were each nominated for the All-American cheerleading team, with Valtierra earning the nod to grab a spot on the 15-member team. According to Mineral Wells ISD, Valtierra was the only junior high cheerleader to earn the honor.
Meanwhile, Moses was nominated and placed on the All-American Mascot team.
