Ladycats move to 5-2 after convincing 58-27 win over Slidell

SANTO – The Santo Ladycats (5-2) secured a 58-27 victory over Slidell thanks to a dominant defensive effort in the second half and Chasen Howard’s hot hand, Tuesday night.

The Ladycats jumped out to a 13-8 lead in the first quarter, keeping Slidell at arms length with a 23-15 halftime score.

After the break, Santo really pulled away, holding Slidell to a scoreless third quarter en route to the win.

Howard led the Ladycats with 16 points, followed Madison Lasater, who sunk nine. Breeana Raffaele and Megan MacPherson tied with eight points, as did Payton Billue and Taylor Nemeth, who both scored six. Courtney Flanagan added five points from the floor.

Santo’s JV girls (8-1) had an equally impressive performance, racing to a 72-9 drubbing of Slidell that same night.

The Ladycats held a commanding 22-0 lead after the first quarter and held Slidell to point totals of two, three and four in the remaining three frames.

Lilly Motley scored 20 points for the team lead, followed close behind by Makaylee Steiner and Sage Sparks, each scoring 15.

Sadie Gann was the last Ladycat in double-digits, having rattled off 13 points. Reagan Raffaele scored six, Caitlyn Finley scored two and Emily Ashbrook hit one shot from the free throw line for a single point.

Weather permitting, Santo’s junior varsity and Varsity are back in action in the Santo Tournament, which starts today and lasts through Saturday.

Strawn girls edged out by Godley

STRAWN – The Strawn Lady Hounds (7-4) fell just short despite a valiant comeback attempt against visiting Godley, 43-40, Tuesday night.

The Lady Hounds found themselves in a 21-6 hole after the first quarter, but battled back to bring the game within four points by the start of the fourth quarter.

But their comeback was not enough, as Godley escaped with the three-point win.

Shelly Abbot captained the comeback, leading the Lady Hounds with 15 points from the floor. Jacqueline Berumen had the second-highest point total with 10.  Tearany Atkins scored eight points and Cidney Pollock added another seven.

Strawn will hit the court again this weekend in the Albany Tournament.

CCS boys thump Cornerstone Chr.

The Community Christian School Warriors (3-1) posted a resounding 65-33 thumping against Cornerstone Christian, Tuesday night at City Gym in Mineral Wells.

Senior Sammy Brazeal was a key cog in the Warriors almost doubling their opponents’ final score.

The big-bodied Brazeal finished with a double-double, having scored 24 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

Tye Gage also secured a double-double, posting 10 points and 12 boards. Sammy’s cousin, Isaiah Brazeal, scored the second-most points on the team with 16.  Also scoring for the Warriors were Noah Dowdy with eight, Josiah Brazeal with three and Levi Knowles and Landon Payne with two each.
