Santo advances with win over Windthorst

— GRAHAM – Sarah Van Remmen scored 13 points to lead the Santo Ladycats to a 54-45 victory over Windthorst here Friday night in a Class A, Division I area championship game.

The win advances Santo to the regional quarterfinals where they will face Goldthwaite in an area-round contest.

Tip off is at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Dublin.

“Defense, defense, defense,” Ladycats head coach Tony Raffaele said. “The girls defended like there was no tomorrow, and they out-rebounded and had less turnovers than Windthorst.

“We will need the same on Tuesday.”

Also scoring for the Ladycats (28-4) were Payton Billue with 12 points, Breeana Raffaele with 11, with 10, Taylor Nemeth and Courtney Flanagan, each with four, Megan MacPherson with three, and Alyssa McKennon and Kristy Trammell, each with two.

Lady Rabbits fall in area championship

OLNEY – Guthrie went on a 10-5 run in the second quarter and matched Graford offensively in the second half as the Lady Jags defeated the Lady Rabbits, 28-23, here Friday in a Class A, Division II area championship game.

“It was a tough loss for the girls to take,” Lady Rabbits head coach Jarod Westmoreland said. “They did everything I wanted them to do on defense but we could not get going on offense.

“Guthrie really did a great job of making us go with our second options when running plays.

“I thought the pressure of the moment got to us some. Anytime you lose in the playoffs it is hard, but we were not ready for our season to come to an end.”

Morgan Hendershott scored nine popints to lead the Lady Rabbits.

Also scoring for Graford (19-12) were Tyler Wimberly with five points, Erika Chemello with four, Sydney Wilmberley with three and Ashly Rogers with two.

Rams tie, Lady Rams fall in 12-4A soccer

In a soccer doubleheader Friday at Ram Stadium, the Mineral Wells Rams tied Boswell, 2-2, while the Lady Rams fell 3-0 to the Lady Pioneers.

The ties leaves the Rams with a 3-2-1 District 12-4A record, while the Lady Rams fall to 3-3.

The Rams held a 2-0 lead after goals from Omar Hernandez, on an assist from Gilbert Castorena, and Serjio Castillo on another assist from Castorena.

Lady Rams goalkeeper Brittany Smith had 11 saves, and the Lady Rams had 14 shots on goal.

Lady Rams fall in softball opener

GRAHAM – Graham erased a 2-0 deficit by scoring a pair of runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth to defeat the Mineral Wells Lady Rams, 3-2, Thursday night in the softball season opener at Lady Blues Stadium.

Allie Stephens took the loss in the circle for MWHS. She allowed three runs on five hits while striking out six.

Reagan Patterson led the Lady Rams at the plate with two hits, while Hope Patterson and Stephens each recorded a hit and drove in a run.

Lady Hounds advance in playoffs

HICO – Jayde Price scored 28 points to lead the Strawn Lady Hounds to an 80-39 win over Milford Thursday in a Class A area championship game.

The Lady Hounds will advance to the regional quarterfinals and play Frost in an area-round game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Clifton.

Strawn jumped out to a 59-21 lead courtesy of nine three-pointers, including six in Strawn’s 31-point first quarter.

Also scoring for Strawn (29-6) were Jacqueline Berumen with 15 points, Cidney Pollock with 12, Shelly Abbott and Tearany Atkins, each with 11, and Cori Pollock with three.

Wildcats win tiebreaker game

PEASTER – Christopher hoover scored 17 points and Zamorris Cannon added 16 to lead the Santo Wildcats to a 71-61 win over Chico here Thursday in a District 11-A, Division I second-place tiebreaker game.

Santo will face San Saba at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Hamilton in the bi-district playoffs.

Also scoring for Santo (23-7) were Keith Chalker with 12 points, Cooper Barling with 10, Parker Conaway with eight, Tim Long with five and Andrew Watkins with three.
