Mineral Wells swimmers dominate with 36 winners in home meet

By CLINT FOSTER

Mineral Wells is well known as the home of Crazy Water, and by all accounts the city's swim team went absolutely berserk in their one and only home meet of the summer on Saturday.

Finally in familiar waters, the Water Moccasins of Mineral Wells crushed the competition, earning 36 first-place ribbons while another 40 local swimmers finished in the top three of their respective events. It was a fitting way to close out the team's season at home before a trip to the regional meet in Keller, July 19-20.

Mineral Wells' first-place winners included Jett Adams, Samantha Ashley, Trevor Buck, Jakob Currin, Melany Emerton, Abigail Farber, Hannah Farber, Noah Farber, Tony Fitch, Taylor Gary, Carsyn Procter, Case Procter, Landen Richards, Russell Richards, Ryan Richards, Paige Riney, Gary Robinson, Caleb Sample, Emma Samples, Zach Samples, Chandler Stults, Megan Waldrum, Preston Waldrum and Kaitlyn Wallace.

The Water Moccasins' relay teams also cleaned up, earning first-place finishes in six out of 10 relay races.

Ryan Richards and Case Procter tied for the team lead with four first-place finishes apiece.

Competing in the boys' 9-10-year-old division, Procter won the 50-yard freestyle in 38.07, the 25-yard freestyle in 16.62, the 100-yard individual medley in 1:56.08 and joined Preston Waldrum and Jake Wilcox to win the 100-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:21.08. He also added a fourth-place finish in the 25-yard backstroke in 23.07.

Nine-year-old Carsyn Procter was a part of the first-place 100-yard freestyle relay with Wallace, Emerton and Abigail Farber that won in 1:16.21. Procter also added two second-place finishes in the 25-yard breaststroke and 100-yard individual medley with times of 26.89 and 1:52.93, respectively, and came in third in the 50-yard freestyle and 25-yard freestyle with 38.78 and 17.56 clips, respectively.

As for Richards, the 15-year-old's wins came in the each of his four individual events. He won the 100-yard freestyle in 1:01.64, the 50-yard backstroke in 33.58, the 50-yard freestyle in 27.63 and the 200-yard freestyle in 2:24.99. The only time Richards didn't top the podium was after a second-place finish with Trevor Buck in the 200-yard medley relay, which they finished in 2:28.89.

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

    By CLINT FOSTER

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
