It looks like Daniel

Perry tabs Daniel Johnson as Mineral Wells' new head softball coach

The Lady Rams have found their new softball coach.

Mineral Wells Athletics Director Gerald Perry announced Thursday that Daniel Johnson would take the reins as the high school's new softball coach following the two most successful seasons in Lady Rams softball history.

In addition to his duties as head softball coach, Perry said Johnson will also serve as special teams coordinator for the Mineral Wells football team.

Former softball coach David Tarver – who capped off his 18th and final season with the Lady Rams with a second-straight area championship, matching the deepest playoff run in school history, and the best record in Lady Rams history at 28-10 – is a tough act to follow. But Perry said he believes Johnson is more than up to the challenge.

"Daniel brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in multiple sports that will benefit our athletic programs in Mineral Wells," Perry said in a statement to the Index. "Daniel is very passionate about the game and will bring great enthusiasm, leadership, organization and a winning attitude that will enhance our winning tradition in softball."

A former athletics director at Teague and Nueces Canyon, Johnson has more than nine years of experience coaching premier select softball teams and spent time as the head softball coach at Taylor County High School in Florida.

Johnson resigned from his most recent job as Teague High School’s athletics director in April of this year for unknown reasons, according to the Teague Chronicle.

Johnson brings his wife, Melissa, and two daughters in seventh and fourth grade to Mineral Wells. Perry said Johnson's wife will teach in Mineral Wells ISD.

Johnson will get the benefit of a wealth of returning talent from the greatest softball team in Mineral Wells history. Both starting pitchers Kelsey Keeton and Allie Stephens will return for their junior and senior years, respectively, and look to form a lethal combination once again.

Also returning for their senior seasons are power-hitting catcher and District 6-3A's Offensive Player of the Year Hope Patterson, center fielder Tabby Santibanez, swithc-hitting left fielder Victoria Huffman and flex player Addison Singleton. District 6-3A's reigning Newcomer of the Year Ashley Valdez will enter her junior year.

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
