Burke, Carter, Fisher among young standouts at early MW summer track meets

Mineral Wells Index

Two meets are in the books for the Mineral Wells Summer Track Club and already many young athletes have risen to the top alongside their varsity counterparts as the apparent track stars of the future.

At the TYSA Texas Invitational at Chisolm Trail High School on June 21, Kolby Burke burst onto the scene in the boys 10-and-9-year-old division, winning first place in three of the four events in which he competed.

Burke won the long jump, high jump and 100-meter dash and still managed to come in fourth in the 400 meters.

Young buck Jaidun Fisher also impressed in the 8 and under boys group, earning first in the 100-meter dash and second in the 400 meters, third in the long jump and sixth in the high jump – each the best on the Mineral Wells team for his age group.

In the 14-and-13-year-old boys division, Weston Newman shined with a first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles and a second place clip in the 300-meter hurdles.

Some of the best of Mineral Wells High School were also on display. Brooklyn Lovern earned first in the high jump, while Preston Brooks won the 3200 meters and Jared Lord finished second in the pole vault.

Head coach Jackie Harvey's budding track talent continued to impress at their second meet, June 28, at the Little Elm Track Meet.

Fisher continued his winning ways, this time earning first in the 400 meters and capturing second in the 200, 50 and 100-meter dashes and third in the long jump.

Weston Newman kept posting medal-worthy finishes, earning second in the 300-meter hurdles and third in the 110-meter hurdles.

Amaya Carter also found her stride at Little Elm to cement her place as one of Mineral Wells' best young up-and-comers. She emerged in the 8 and under girls division to win the 50-meter dash and finish third in the 100 meters and fifth in the long jump.

The summer track club next heads to Lewisville High School, July 12, for the Lake Cities Track Meet, followed by the Regional Meet at The Colony, July 18-19, and the TAAF State Track Meet in College Station, July 31-Aug. 1.
