Lady Rams JV team stays unbeaten, in first place in District 6-3A after win at Castleberry

RIVER OAKS – Tahya Ruelas scored 12 points and Kylie Burk added 10 to lead the Mineral Wells Lady Rams junior varsity to a 49-15 victory over Castleberry Tuesday in a District 6-3A game at Castleberry.

The win keeps the Lady Rams undefeated in District 6-3A and in first place with a 6-0 mark.

Also scoring for the Lady Rams were Mason Malone and Kenzie Huseman, each with six points, Rachell Merritt and Alli Blissette, each with four, Mariah Horton with three, and Brooke Hale and Katlin Norton, each with two.

The Lady Rams led 8-2 after the first quarter and built a 16-8 lead at the half.

The Lady Rams went on a 19-4 run in the third period to take a 35-12 lead into the fourth quarter.

Freshman ladies defeat Lady Lions

RIVER OAKS – Ty Turner-Suitors scored 12 points and Aeris Carter-Smith added nine to lead  the Mineral Wells Lady Rams freshman team to a 56-6 victory over Castleberry Tuesday in a District 6-3A game at Castleberry.

The win keeps the Lady Rams undefeated in District 6-3A and in first place with a 5-0 mark.

Also scoring for the Lady Rams were Brooklyn Lovern and Mollie Simonton, each with eight points, Lanisa Small and Adrianna Rousseax, each with six, Hannah Laigle with four and Jacey Grimes with three.

Rams JV wins

RIVER OAKS – Jordan Duckett scored 24 points to lead the Mineral Wells Rams junior varsity to a 60-56 victory over Castleberry Tuesday in a District 6-3A game at Castleberry.

The win elevates the Rams’ district mark to 3-1.

Also scoring for the Rams (12-5) were Cameron Weiss and Chris Ortiz, each with eight points, Nigel Benavides with six, Justin Henderickson with five, Conner Bradshaw with three, and Tristan Seargeant, Ale Ortiz and DJ Jernigan, each with two.

The Rams trailed 14-11 after the opening period but scored 20 points in the second quarter while holding the Lions to 16 to take a 31-30 lead at the break.

Castleberry went on a 10-4 run in the third period to take a 40-35 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Rams exploded for 25 points in the fourth while allowing 16 to come back and tale the victory.

Rams frosh win

RIVER OAKS – Riley Loya scored 24 points, including five three-pointers, to lead the Mineral Wells Rams freshman team to a 58-46 victory over Castleberry Tuesday in a District 6-3A game at Castleberry.

Paced by three three-pointers by Loya, the Rams scored 18 points in the opening period and followed with 10 points in the second to take a 28-20 lead at the half.

Castleberry outscored MWHS 16-14 in the third period to cut the Rams’ lead to 42-36 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.

Also scoring for the Rams were Lane Houston with 13 points, Gaige McDougal with 10, Trevor Buck with four, Matt Perez with three, and Max Whaley and Jerome Johnson, each with two.

CCS boys fall

Cornerstone Christian Academy jumped out to a 28-8 lead and never looked in their 77-37 win over the Community Christian School Warriors on Tuesday.

Warriors post Sammy Brazeal recorded a double double with 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead CCS (11-6, 5-4). He also had three blocked shots.

Also scoring for CXS were Jonathan Rives with 12 points, Isaiah Brazeal with eight and Levi Knowles with two.

Santo 8th girls win

Victoria Gilbreath scored 26 points to lead the Santo Junior High School Ladycats eighth-grade team to a 31-28 win Monday over Chico.

Also scoring for Santo were Jill Johnson with four points and Cheyenne Jones with one point.

Santo 7th girls fall

Chico defeated the Santo Junior High School Ladycats seventh-grade tam, 39-6, on Monday.

Kaylee McKinnerney scored four points to lead the Ladycats, with Audrey Ouster adding two points.

“Several seventh-grade girls were moved up to the eight-grade team,” Santo coach Tony Raffaele said. “These (seventh grade) girls are starting to understand the game better and will continue to work on skills.”

    Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

    I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

    Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

    The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

    I can think of at least 10.

    So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.

    Mineral Wells Women's Bowling Alliance invites you to join them Aug. 3 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Mountaineer Lanes for their second annual Bowlers Roundup. The event will feature snacks, tips from the pros, information on league bowling and two hours of great exercise.

  • Hooks and Slices 7/11

    In the Holiday Hills Country Club Guys and Dolls tournament, locals Denny and Sherry Hall turned in rounds of 77 and 73 to take first place in the opening round and second place on Sunday in the fourth flight. George and Linda Hutton turned in two solid rounds to place both days. The twosome shot 71 and 72 to take first place on Saturday and second place on Sunday in the second flight.
