MWHS’ basketball district different from football

The UIL announced on Monday new districts for classes 1A through 6A, and Mineral Wells High School found itself placed in a basketball district that is not the same as the football district.

In football, MWHS was placed in District 4-4A Division I along with Graham, Burkburnett, Decatur, Gainesville and Wichita Falls Hirschi.

MWHS was placed in District 6-4A for hoops. Basketball districts were not split into “big school”(Division I) or “small school” (Division II) divisions as all Class 4A schools will compete for one state championship in roundball.

The only other school that will join MWHS in the five-school basketball district is Graham. Other members of 6-4A include Abilene Wylie, Brownwood an Stephenville.

This will be a competitive district for both the boys and girls, and because of UIL rules that qualify four teams from each district for the playoffs, one team will be left out of the postseason from 6-4A.

The strongest team in the district on the boys’ side is Abilene Wylie, currently ranked No. 5 in Class 3A (most 3A school were bumped up to 4A beginning next school in the UIL realignment). Last year, Wylie defeated District 6-3A champion Kennedale in the regional final as Wylie lost to eventual state champion Dallas Madison in the state semifinals.

Stephenville won its district last year and advanced three rounds in the playoffs, while Graham, in the 2012-13 season, was knocked out of the playoffs by Stephenville in the second round. Brownwood did not qualify for the playoffs last year.

The Lady Rams will also discover 6-4A to be a competitive girls’ hoops district. Abilene Wylie is ranked No. 9 in Class 3A, and last season the Lady Bulldogs won its district before falling in the second round.

The Stephenville Honeybees are not ranked this season but lost last year in the regional final to District 6-3A champion and state finalist Kennedale.

Brownwood made the playoffs last year, and the Lady Lions are currently ranked No. 23 in Class 3A.
