Rams swat 10 hits in win over Decatur

Starting off the 2014 baseball season with some offensive punch, the Mineral Wells Rams swatted 10 hits, including three extra base hits, to defeat the Decatur Eagles, 6-3, Monday night in the season opener at Pratt Field.

The Rams will play next at the North Texas Rotation Tournament. MWHS will host two days of the three-day tournament on Thursday and Friday at Pratt Field.

The Rams will play at 11 a.m. Thursday against Bridgeport and at 4 p.m. later that day against Burkburnett.

On Friday, the Rams will play at 11 a.m. against Saginaw Chisholm Trail and at 4 p.m. that day against Sanger.

The Rams will complete tournament play on the road Saturday as MWHS will travel to Decatur to face the Eagles at 4 p.m.

On Monday night against Decatur, McCain Mason led the Rams at the plate with three hits in three at bats with a pair of singles and a double.

“We played pretty well and the biggest surprise of the night was how well we hit the ball,” Rams head coach Bret Barrick said. “I was very pleased with that, and our pitching was good.

“Our pitchers kept the ball in the field and defensively we played well.

“We had some mistakes, but overall a good opening game and good way to get the season started.”

The Rams’ pitchers also fared well as sophomore Braxton Allen went five innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Chris Rapp came on in relief, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in two innings.

Allen was also productive at the plate, going two for four with two doubles and two runs batted in while also crossing the plate twice.

Colby Kissinger had one hit with an RBI and a run; Frank Jackson recored a pair of hits; and Brayden Garcia went two for three with an RBI and a run scored.

Also scoring a run for the Rams were Bob Boudreau and  Chance Wade.

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
