It will be a busy week for the Mineral Wells Rams and Lady Rams track teams and Lady Rams softball team.
The Lady Rams and Rams regional track meet qualifiers are preparing for this week’s Class 3A, Region I Track and Field Meet which will be Friday and Saturday at Fuller Track at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
Perhaps the highlight of the regional track meet will be the performance of Rams junior sprinter DaShawn Hicks, who has won the 100-meter dash in every meet he has entered. Hicks ran a season-best 10.28 Wednesday at the area meet in Springtown.
The top two finishers in all events at the area meet will advance to the state meet in Austin in May.
MWHS athletes expected to have the best chance at qualify for state were the other first-place finishers from the area meet including Sydney Shelstead (discus), Alex Pearcy (1,600-meter run), Rascellis Williams (high jump) and Juvaree Sutton (300-meter hurdles). Hicks also won the 200-meter dash and will be a favorite in that race.
Another Lady Ram with a good chance to advance to state is distance runner Karessa Fowler, who placed second at the area meet in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.
Lady Rams athlete Taylor Parkhill also placed second at the area meet in two events she has a chance to advance to state in the 300-meter hurdles and pole vault. She also qualified in the 100-meter hurdles and sprint relay.
The regional meet will begin on Friday with the 3,200-meter run, running preliminaries, girls’ discus, girls’ long jump, boys’ high jump, boys’ shot put, boys’ triple jump and boys’ pole vault, with girls’ pole vault, boys’ discus, girls’ shot put, girls’ high jump, girls’ triple jump, boys’ long jump, the 1,600-meter run and running finals scheduled for Saturday.
The Lady Rams softball team is preparing for a weekend bi-district playoff series against rival Graham after finishing in second place in District 6-3A.
Game one of the series will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Graham, with game two at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mineral Wells. Game three, if necessary, will be played 30 minutes following game two.
Also, the Mineral Wells Rams baseball team will prepare for next week’s bi-district playoffs with a warm-up game Saturday at Pratt Field. The Rams will play Henrietta, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Rams have already announced their bi-district playoff series schedule. MWHS will take on Iowa Park in a Class 3A, best-of-three bi-district playoff series that begins May 3 in Decatur. All three games of the series will be played at Decatur.
The Rams and Iowa Park will play game one at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, with game two scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4.
Game three, if necessary, will be played 30 minutes following game two.
