MWHS cross country advances two teams to regional meet

For the second year in a row, MWHS advanced both the boys and girls cross country teams to the regional cross country meet.

Mineral Wells junior Karessa Fowler won the district championship for the second year in a row, and classmate Alex Pearcy finished second.

At the regional meet, Alex Pearcy placed ninth with a time of 12:15.9  to qualify for the state cross country meet. She finished in 51st place at the state meet.

Lady Rams basketball team reaches regional quarterfinals

The Lady Rams went 24-10 and defeated Vernon (67-44) and Liberty Hill (45-41) in the playoffs before falling to state finalist Kennedale, 74-57, in the regional quarterfinals. Post Sydney Shelstead was named co-MVP of 6-3A, averaging 22 points and 13 rebounds per game. Her sister, Kennedy, was selected Newcomer of the Year as the team was coached by their father, Ed Shelstead. It was also a fitting end to a long varsity career by Niya Benavides, who along with freshman guard Natalie Ragland earned first-team, all-district honors.

Strawn gridders have deep playoff run

The Strawn Greyhounds were ranked high in six man Division II football all season and advanced to the state quarterfinals before being defeated by Newcastle, 64-62.

Lady Rams softball sets school mark with area championship

For the first time in Mineral Wells High School history, the Lady Rams softball team advanced to the regional quarterfinals after a convincing 16-4 victory over Hillsboro to sweep the best-of-three area championships series two games to none.

The Lady Rams were eliminated in the third round (regional quarterfinals) by state-ranked No. 6 Burkburnett.

Lady Rams win district golf tournament

Paced by the District 6-3A girls’ top individual medalist, Scarlett Eaton, the Lady Rams won the district golf tournament. Eaton’s teammate, Tara Cooper placed second overall. Paige Crowley earned all-district, first-team honors, and Whitney Ratto rounded out the squad. The Rams finished in second place as both teams advanced to the regional tournament.

    Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

    I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

    Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

    The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

    I can think of at least 10.

    So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.

  • Local Bowlers Roundup set for first weekend of August

    Mineral Wells Women's Bowling Alliance invites you to join them Aug. 3 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Mountaineer Lanes for their second annual Bowlers Roundup. The event will feature snacks, tips from the pros, information on league bowling and two hours of great exercise.

  • Hooks and Slices 7/11

    In the Holiday Hills Country Club Guys and Dolls tournament, locals Denny and Sherry Hall turned in rounds of 77 and 73 to take first place in the opening round and second place on Sunday in the fourth flight. George and Linda Hutton turned in two solid rounds to place both days. The twosome shot 71 and 72 to take first place on Saturday and second place on Sunday in the second flight.
