CLIFTON – Jayde Price scored 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Strawn Lady Hounds to a decisive 65-48 victory over Frost Tuesday night here in a girls’ Class A, Division II, regional quarterfinal game.
The win advances the Lady Hounds (30-6) to the regional tournament semifinals at Tyler College. The Lady Hounds will play at 3 p.m. Friday against state-ranked No. 1 Saltillo.
“Shelly Abbott did an outstanding job handling Frost’s full court, intense pressure the entire game,” Lady Hounds head coach Joe Crabb said. “Shelly had 10 assist while only committing two turnovers, which is unreal considering how effective their pressure is.
“They rely on their defensive pressure to make teams turn the ball over to provide them with offense, and Shelly was determined to not let that happen.”
Price also recorded five assists and five blocks.
“Another big game from Jayde, especially from the free throw line (12 of 13),” Crabb said. “Jacqueline Berumen continued her outstanding outside shooting going four of six from the three-point line, and Eva De Gregorio stepped up off the bench and contributed a very solid defensive performance when starter Tearany Atkins went down in the first quarter with an ankle sprain.
“Our half court traps caused them a lot of problems and they turned the ball over several times. I was extremely pleased with the girls overall performance.
“We have a very tough task ahead of us facing Saltillo, they are huge and pose a lot of problems both offensively and defensively, but we are looking forward to the challenge”
Also scoring for Strawn were Berumen with 12 points, Abbott with nine, Cori Pollock with seven, De Gregorio with four and Atkins with three.
DUBLIN – Goldthwaite outscored Santo 16-11 in the fourth quarter on its way to a 46-41 win over the Santo Ladycats here Tuesday night in a girls’ Class A, Division I regional quarterfinal contest.
The Ladycats finish the season with a 28-5 record.
Breeana Raffaele led the Ladycats with 14 points, with Sarah Van Remmen adding 12.
“*I am very proud of our girls and the way they fought last night,” Ladycats head coach Tony Raffaele said. “We needed to attack the basket more and struggled in the first half, but never gave up and came out in the second half on fire.
“Sarah having three fouls in the first half limited us defensively against their six-foot post. When Sarah fouled out, it put us in a bind but the girls played as hard as they could.
“Bree had an outstanding game, especially in the second half. I am proud of her because the coach is the hardest on her. The emotional roller coaster takes its toll, but I couldn’t imagine doing anything else or coaching anywhere else. Time to get back to work because everyone wants to beat us.”
Also scoring for the Ladycats were Payton Billue with six points, Taylor Nemeth with five, Courtney Flanagan with three and Megan MacPherson with one.
