Lady Rams win District 6-3A golf tournament

Eaton top girls’ medalist; Rams place second as both teams qualify for regional tourney

FORT WORTH – Mineral Wells Lady Rams golfer Scarlett Eaton shot a final-round score of 100 for two-round total of 205 on Monday at Glen Gardens Country Club to defeat teammate Tara Cooper by 24 stroke for top medalist and the pair led the MWHS ladies to the team championship of the girls’ District 6-3A golf tournament.

The Lady Rams shot an overall total of 948, including a 457 on Monday. The championship qualifies the Lady Rams for the girls’ Region I tournament, which will be played April 15-16 at Shadow Hills Golf Club in Lubbock.

Also qualifying for the regional tournament were the Rams, who shot an overall total of 757 to finish in second place. The top two teams form the district tournaments qualify for the regional tournament.

The boys’ Region I tournament will be played April 17-18 at Shadow Hills Golf Club in Lubbock.

The Rams were led by Reece Tarver, who finished fourth in the race for top medalist after shooting a 36-hole total of 181, including a 90 on Monday.

“I am very proud of both teams,” MWHS golf coach Tommy Fincher said. “We are really looking forward to the regional tournaments.

“It took a lot of outside help to help get us to regionals, and I want to acknowledge Holiday Hills Country Club for all of their support.”

Eaton shot a 105 and led by 11 strokes over Cooper after the first round. Eaton’s 100 in the second round bested the field that day by 13 strokes as she secured the girls’ top medalist crown.

Eaton, along with Cooper and Paige Crowley, made the all-district, first team.

The highest non-Mineral Wells finisher in the girls’ tournament was Kennedale’s Brianna Dillon, who finished third overall with a two-day total of 234 (121-113). She earned all-district, first-team honors along with teammate Allison Duran (127-116-243).

Bailey Savage of Castleberry (130-116-246) earned all-district, second-team honors, along with Springtown golfers  Rachel Rayford (131-117-248), Micheala Rodriguez (134-123-257), Jimmie Gee (130-129-259) and Kaylon Cremen (138-122-260).

Tarver opened with a 91, but no one would touch Kennedale’s Cole Ward, who was the boys’ top medalist after opening with a 73 and closing with a 76 for a 36-hole score of 149. He defeated teammate Josh Erwin (92-86-178) by 29 strokes.

Aden Wheat of Castleberry (94-86-180) finished a stroke ahead of Tarver to take third place, and Michael Page of Kennedale (96-86-182) rounded out the top five which is also the all-district, first team.

Three Rams – Nick Wendt (96-94-190), Rylie Hill (96-95-191) and Josh Hardee (101-94-195) – earned all-district, second-team honors. Trey Skaggs (92-92-184) of Springtown and Phillip Romo (100-96-196) of Castleberry rounded out the all-district, second team.

Kennedale led by 13 strokes after the opening round and clinched the boys’ team title after shooting a 349 on Monday.
