Santo, Strawn girls advance to respective regional tournaments

GORMAN – Courtney Flanagan, Payton Billue and Breeana Raffaele each scored in double figures to lead the Santo Ladycats to a 53-48 victory over San Saba here Tuesday night in a girls’ Class A, Region II, Division I quarterfinal game.

The win advances to the Ladycats (22-8) to the regional tournament in Abilene.

Santo will face Ivanhoe Sam Rayburn at 3 p.m. Friday in the regional semifinals at Abilene Christian University.

A Santo win would advance the Ladycats to the regional championship game, which will be played at noon Saturday at ACU. The winner of the regional championship game advances to the state tournament in Austin.

Flanagan led the Ladycats with 13 points. She has led Santo in scoring in both playoff games this year. Billue added 11 points, with Raffaele finishing with 10.

“It was a great game and a great team effort,” Ladycats head coach Tony Raffaele said.

Also scoring for the Ladycats were Chase Howard with eight points, Taylor Nemesis with four, Callie Wharton with three, and Jami Trotter and Madison Lasagne, each with two.

Santo led 13-12 after the opening period and built a 30-26lead at the half. The Ladycats went on a 13-8 run in the third period to take a 43-34 lead into the fourth quarter.



Strawn 85, Coolidge 52

HICO – For the second year in a row, the Strawn Lady Hounds will advance to the regional tournament in Tyler.

Paced by 26 points from Jayde Price, the Lady Hounds ran past Coolidge, 85-52, here Tuesday night in a girls’ Class A, Region III, Division II quarterfinal contest.

The win advances the Ladycats to the regional semifinals at Tyler Junior College. Strawn will face Saltillo at 10 a.m. Friday at TJC’s Wagstaff Gym.

A Strawn win would advance the Lady Hounds to the regional final which is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at TJC. The winner of Saturday’s regional final will advance to the state tournament in Austin.

Also scoring for Strawn (23-9) were Jacqueline Berumen with 17 points, Cidney Pollock  and Tearany Atkins, each with 15, Shelly Abbott with eight and Kallie Hodgkins with four.

Strawn led 18-11 after the first quarter and went on a 24-7 run in the second period to take a commanding 42-18 lead at the half.

Strawn outscored Coolidge 23-19 in the third period to take a 65-37 lead into the fourth quarter.
