GORMAN - The Gorman Panthers put together a 13-0 run midway through the second quarter on Friday and then held off a furious second-half rally to claim a 69-60 victory over the Strawn Greyhounds in District 17-A, Division II action.
With the loss, Strawn slipped to 1-5 for the season, and 0-3 in district play.
The loss spoiled a stellar outing from sophomore Harrison Nowak. He helped power a 35-point second-half surge by the Greyhounds by pouring in 24 of his game-high 32 points in the final two periods, including 14 in the closing eight minutes.
After Abram Jaramillo and Bobby Wells had combined for back-to-back baskets that tied the score at 22-22 with 4:47 left the second quarter, Strawn’s offense went cold.
Gorman used a 13-0 run over the next three minutes to fuel a 16-3 spree and take a 38-25 lead into the half.
Turnovers haunted the Strawn offense throughout the contest. The team committed 20 turnovers, 12 of which led to Gorman points.
Ross Alison and Cole Abbott also played well for Strawn. Alison pushed in 11 points, while Abbott chipped in nine.
No. 6 Santo downs Ranger
RANGER – Sarah Van Remmen scored 20 points to lead the state-ranked No. 6 Santo Ladycats to a 59-22 victory over Ranger here Friday night in a District 11-A (Division I) contest.
The win raises the Ladycats’ overall mark to 22-4, and 3-1 in district play.
Also scoring for the Ladycats were Breeana Raffaele with nine points, Courtney Flanagan with eight, Payton Billue with seven, Alyssa McKennon with five, Taylor Nemeth and Chloe McGlaun, each with four, and Kristy Trammell with two.
Santo led 17-3 after the opening period and 35-12 at the half. The Ladycats went on a 20-5 run in the third period to take a 55-17 lead into the fourth quarter.
