GORDON – Sydney Wimberly scored 10 points and added six rebounds to lead the Graford Lady Rabbits to a 34-26 victory over the Gordon Lady Longhorns here Tuesday night in the season basketball opener for both teams.
Tristen Johnson and Valerie Casteneada each scored eight points to lead the Lady Longhorns.
“We are happy to get a win against a good Gordon team at their place,” Lady Rabbits coach Jarod Westmoreland said. “Gordon’s changing defenses caused us problems, but we were able to hit a couple of big baskets in the fourth quarter to get the win.
“I thought our defense was solid for the entire game, and our shooting wasn’t there but I feel it will come around.”
Also scoring for the Lady Rabbits were Morgan Hendershott with eight points, Tyler Wimberly with seven, Erika Chemello with five and Ashly Rogers with four. Hendershott grabbed four rebounds, Chemello and Rogers recorded three boards apiece and Tyler Wimberly finished with a pair of rebounds.
Also scoring for the Lady Longhorns were Rheagan Johnson with four points, and Kaylee Ginn, Loven Wheeler and Hailey Rouse, each with two.
Graford led 10-7 after the first quarter and 22-16 at the half. Gordon outscored Graford 3-0 in the third period to cut the Lady Rabbits’ lead to 22-21 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
Ladycats win opener, 48-27
SANTO – Breeana Raffaele scored 13 points and Alyssa McKennon added 11 to lead the Santo Ladycats to a convincing 48-27 win over Graham here Tuesday night in the season opener.
Also scoring for Santo were Sarah Van Remmen with 10 points, Payton Billue and Megan MacPherson, each with four, Kristy Trammell with three, Courtney Flanagan with two and Taylor Nemeth with one.
“We struggled on offense in the first half, but finally got on track in the second half,” Ladycats coach Tony Raffaele said. “Our defense was good for the entire game.”
In the JV game, Santo fell to Graham, 27-25. Callie Wharton and Caylin Edwards each scored eight points to lead Santo.
No. 6 Strawn wins opener, 53-37
STRAWN – State-ranked No. 6 Strawn blew past Abilene Christian, 53-37, here Tuesday night in the season opener.
Jayde Price led the Lady Hounds with 20 points, with Jacqueline Berumen adding 19.
Also scoring for Strawn were Cori Pollock with six points, and Shelly Abbott and Tearany Atkins, each with four.
Strawn led 14-7 after the first quarter and 20-16 at the break. The Lady Hounds went on a 22-5 run in the third period to take a 42-21 lead into the fourth quarter.
