FORT WORTH – For the third consecutive season and the third year under the watch of head coach Rolando Borjon, the Mineral Wells Rams have clinched a playoff berth after defeating Boswell, 2-0, here Monday night in a key District 12-4A soccer match.
The Rams have actually clinched third place, but Borjon said even if the Rams win Tuesday night in the home finale on Senior Night against Brewer that MWHS would need an unlikely Springtown win over Azle – currently sitting in second place in 12-4A – on Tuesday to get into a second-place tie.
“In the first half we started slow and there was no spark,” Borjon said. “We were able to get some shots, (senior midfielder/forward) Serjio (Castillo) broke away and his shot hit the crossbar.”
Castillo’s threat was the closet the Rams got to the Boswell goal as the first half ended at 0-0.
“We told the boys at half that they needed to step up and clinch that playoff spot,” Borjon said. “The second half was a lot better. We had several key chances throughout the second half.”
The Rams’ first goal came with about eight minutes left in the game.
Gilbert Castorena gave Castillo a pass around the penalty kick mark and Castillo drove a ground-level shot into the back of the net as MWHS led 1-0.
“After Serjio’s goal we got that spark we were looking for,” Borjon said.
Three minutes later, sophomore forward Omar Hernandez gave Castorena a header pass into the middle where Castorena took the ball one-on-one with the goalkeeper and put it in the bottom left corner to extend the lead to 2-0.
“(Rams senior goalkeeper) Caleb Bandy made key saves to deny Boswell the chance to score all night,” Borjon said. “Our defense played a solid game the entire night.
“Our midfielders had enough in the tank to give us that late spark to win the game.
“We are proud of these boys and their accomplishments the past years.”
The Rams will conclude the season at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home against Brewer.
Lady Rams 1, Boswell 1
In the second match of the twin bill, the Mineral Wells Lady Rams and Boswell fought to a 1-1 tie.
The tie leaves the Lady Rams with a 6-5-2 record and the MWHS ladies stay in fourth place. The top four teams from each district qualify for the playoffs.
The Lady Rams will conclude the season at 8 p.m. Tuesday at home against Brewer.
