An interesting story this season regarding the Mineral Wells Rams football program has been the progress of the Rams freshman football team.
Although the varsity Rams are enjoying a bye week along with the junior varsity squad, the Rams freshman team faced Perrin JV Thursday night at Ram Stadium.
The game was scheduled because the freshman Rams will not have a game on Oct. 24 due to Diamond Hill – the varsity and JV opponent during the third week of district play – not being able to field a freshman squad.
The bigger Pirates took an early 8-0 lead, but the Rams, paced by quarterback Trent Guinn and the strong running of Johnny Morales and Cameron Weiss, scored 38 unanswered points to take a 3808 victory.
The win elevates the Rams to 4-2 overall, and 1-1 against JV squads. Earlier in the season the freshmen Rams fell to Aledo’s sophomore junior varsity squad.
That game was played because Wichita Falls Hirschi could not field a freshman team.
Perrin scored on its first possession when running back Gage Aguilar broke a pair of tackles and sprinted 85 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown with 8:25 left in the opening quarter. Running back Dathan Hill ran in the two-point conversion to give the Pirates a quick 8-0 lead.
The Rams responded by tying the score on their first drive of the contest. Morales ran 51 yards before being tackled at the Perrin 1-yard line, and two plays later Morales’ number was called again as he bullied in from the one into the end zone. Guinn passed to Weiss for the conversion that tied the game 8-8 with 6:55 left in the first period.
Perrin fumbled away its next opportunity as Rams defender Eduardo Rasberry recovered the loose pigskin. But the Rams fumbled the ball back to Perrin on the next play to negate the turnover.
