Victory moves Rams’ freshman team to 5-2

One of the most positive stories coming out of the 2013 football season at Mineral Wells High School is the development of the freshman football team which saw its record climb to 5-2 and 1-0 in District 6-3A play after the Rams defeated Lake Worth, 38-34, Thursday (Oct. 17) at Ram Stadium.

The freshman Rams will take a break this week as some of them will play on the junior varsity Thursday because Diamond Hill does not field a freshman team.

Of the freshman Rams two losses, one came against Aledo’s 10th grade team, and one of the wins came against Perrin’s JV.

Against Lake Worth, Johnny Morales ran for three touchdowns and quarterback Trent Guinn threw for two TDs and ran for another.

In a wild first quarter that was tied 14-14, the Rams got on the board on a nifty scramble by Guinn that turned out to be a 39-yard touchdown run. Guinn started to his right then sharply cut to his left and outran his pursuers. Morales ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

Lake Worth came back to take a 14-8 lead before Guinn led the Rams on an eight-play, 60-yard drive that ended on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Guinn to Angel Garcia.

Each team then matched the other for a score as the game was tied at 20-20. The Rams’ score came on a 10-play, 60-yard drive culminating in a nine-yard TD run by Morales.

The Rams took a 26-20 lead just before the half ended on a 23-yard TD pass from Guinn to Christian Garcia. The Garcia name was all over this contest as earlier in the quarter Andy Garcia had recovered a fumble.

A big play in the drive was a 23-yard pass completion from Guinn to Cameron Weiss that bought the ball to the LW 29.

After forcing Lake Worth to punt to begin the third quarter, Guinn marched the Rams on an 11-play, 81-yard drive that was capped by a three-yard blast to pay dirt by Morales. The conversion run failed as MWHS led 32-20.
