MWJH football teams go 0-5-1 against Stephenville on Tuesday

The Mineral Wells Junior High Rams eighth grade football teams played the Stephenville Yellow Jackets on Tuesday at Ram Stadium.

The Rams “C” team lost 6-0.

“The guys played played hard,” coach Taylor Tomlin said. “The guys had a couple opportunities to score and win the game, but weren’t able to punch it in.

“We had big plays on passes from Jason Hite to Fernando Esparza. Joshua Almanza and Andrew Russel ran hard and Marcus Musser had an interception on defense.”

The Rams “B” team and Stephenvile played to a 20-20 tie.

All three touchdowns were scored by Zack Glover. Two on long rushes, and another on a fumble recovery.

“Trevor Haubert played incredibly well while fighting through an injury,” Tomlin said.

The Rams “A” team lost 26 -0.

“The guys played possibly their best game of the season,” Tomlin said. “James Gonzalez ran wild for us on offense, and he also had a fumble recovery on defense.

“Seth Slack found Tyler Johnson on three straight passing plays that almost ended in a scoring drive. We had several drives inside the 20 yard line, now we have to find a way to put the ball in the end zone next week.

“Honorable mention goes to the offensive and defensive lines in this game. We controlled the line of scrimmage all night. This was definitely a growing experience for us.”

7th grade teams fall

All three MWJH seventh grade football teams fell Tuesday at Stephenville.

The Rams seventh-grade “C” team lost, 32-26, on a last second touchdown pass. Touchdowns were scored by Brady Huseman and Edgar Tejeda.

The Rams “B” team lost 24-16. Touchdowns were scored on a 70-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Merrill. The other touchdown was scored by Irving Batrez.

The Rams “A” team lost 20-16. Touchdowns were scored by Brandon Hinojos. Quarterback Ryan Goodwin and Hinojos each added a two-point conversion.

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
