Hustling MWJH volleyball teams fall just short

The Mineral Wells Junior High School eighth-grade “A” team Lady Rams played a great game with a lot of hustle and effort on Thursday but lost a heartbreaker to the Brewer Lady Bears.

Leading the Lady Rams in good passes were Sunni Lemley with 50 passes, Kaylee Gregory with 38 passes, Madison Gibbs with 33 passes and Beatriz Martinez with 14 passes.

Leading the Lady Rams in hits were Madison Gibbs with four spikes, Sunni Lemley, Kaylee Gregory, and Cali Pilgrim, each with three spikes while Hailey Hunter had two hits.

Blocking well for the Lady Rams were Sunni Lemley with four blocks, Madison Gibbs and Cali Pilgrim with three blocks, Kaylee Gregory with two blocks and Hailey Hunter and Taylor Levan, each with one stop.

“This was another very exciting game for these young athletes with lots of hitting, blocking, digging and diving for loose balls,” coach Jeff Brumfield said.

Lady Rams 8th B drops pair

The Lady Rams eighth-grade “B” team played a very closely contested match against Brewer on Thursday but dropped a pair of close matches, 25-20, 25-20.

“In each game the lead passed back and forth several times,” coach Victor Pyle said. “There were several very long and exciting volleys. Unfortunately the Lady Rams fell just short of a victory.”

Outstanding players were Ashley Anderson with nine passes to the setter, seven good serves and three sets.

Destiny Bell had 17 passes, three good serves, sets and spikes.

Montana Choate, Mia Ragland and Brittany Barbee had nine passes each. Angel Beavers made 17 passes to the setter, one dig and 20 points on service.

“This was a very enjoyable game to watch,” Pyle said. “The team is continuing to show improvement every week.”

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

    By CLINT FOSTER

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
