Graford's Wimberly named 11-1A-II Offensive POY

Lady Rabbits place five on all-district team

A successful 2013-14 campaign for the Graford Lady Rabbits basketball team was capped off last week with the announcement that senior point guard Syndey Wimberly was named "Offensive Player of the Year" by district coaches. The district runner-up Lady Rabbits also placed five girls on the All-District 11-!A-II team.

Graford finished 18-10 – 8-2 in district – culminating in an untimely 40-26 loss to Baird in the first round of the 1A Division II playoffs in mid-February.

Wimberly led the way all season, averaging 14.3 points per game, seven rebounds, 8.2 steals and 4.3 assists. Her stats led Graford in points, steals and assists. Head coach Jarod Westmoreland said her presence all over the court was key to the Lady Rabbits' success.

"Sydney was very important to our team this year," he said. "She was our point guard and did a little of everything for us. We will really miss her leadership next year."

Joining Wimberly on First Team All-District were fellow senior Ashley Hay and junior post Morgan Hendershott.

Westmoreland said Hay improved her offensive skills in her senior season, but her calling card remained her defensive skills and three-point shooting. Hay averaged 8.3 points per game, 3.3 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.6 assists.

Hendershott – the only returning member of the Lady Rabbits to place on all-district – was Graford's leading rebounder, averaging 8.1 boards per game to go along with 8.8 points and 1.3 steals.

Senior Ashley Rogers placed on the all-district second team. The three-year starter saw her whole game improve on both ends of the court this season. She averaged 8.6 points per game, 6.4 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 3.8 assists.

"When Ashley (Rogers) was scoring, we seemed to play better as a team," Westmoreland said.

Earning honorable mention was senior Katie Rochelle.

Graford also shined in the classroom, placing four young ladies on the Academic All-District team – tied for the second-most in District 11-1A-II. Hay, Rogers, Wimberly and Hendershott each maintained A's in all four core subject areas – math, English, science and social studies – to garner the honor.

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
