Peaster’s late three sinks Rams, 47-44

STAFF REPORTS

PEASTER – Josh Petermeier hit a three-point bucket as the buzzer sounded to lift Peaster to a 47-44 win over the Mineral Wells Rams here Tuesday night.

The loss – the fourth in a row for MWHS – drops the Rams to 7-8.

“The shot was well contested,” Rams head coach Aaron Pappas said. “Ty (Ashley) was in (Petermeier’s) face, but he just made a great shot, a dream shot. It was nothing but net.”

Ricky Scott led the Rams with 17 points, with Biron Clardy adding 16, including three three-pointers in the second half.

The Rams fell behind quickly as Peaster – courtesy of 11 points in the first quarter from Ty Ballard, who led all scorers with 22 points – took a 15-4 lead after the opening period.

However, the Rams outscored Peaster 15-10 in the second period and 17-7 in the third quarter to take a 36-32 lead into the fourth quarter.

But Peaster held MWHS to eight points in the fourth quarter while scoring 12 before the buzzer-beating trey that sealed the win for the Bulldogs.

“Against a team like Peaster which takes care of the ball, being down 11 early makes it hard to come back, and if you do come back like we did you spend a lot of energy,” Pappas said. “But give our guys credit, after the first quarter they scratched and fought our way back in the game.

“But (Petermeier) made a big shot when it counted.”

Pappas said the team needs to play for four quarters to get back on the winning track. The Rams will host Brownwood at 4:30 p.m. Friday. The Rams defeated the Lions earlier this year in a tournament.

“We have been starting slow lately,” Pappas said. “We have had bad first quarters before (Tuesday night), and it’s hard to play from behind.

“We have to start playing better from the opening tip, and if we can do that we will be able to play with Brownwood. We beat them (52-41) in the Glen Rose tournament, but they have film on us now and will be better prepared.

“It’s going to be a dog fight for us, and we expect every game to be that way, so we need to find good looks on offense and not have any more defensive lapses that let teams go on big runs.”

Also scoring for the Rams were DaShawn Hicks with six points, Ashley with three and A.J. Williams with two.

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

    By CLINT FOSTER

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
