Two area high school football teams that did not make the playoffs in 2012 find themselves with sparkling 2-0 records after the first two weeks of the 2013 season.

The Santo Wildcats and Perrin Pirates are each undefeated after their first two contests, and both were a win away last year from earning a postseason berth.

Perrin defeated Gorman on Friday, 48-0, and that victory followed a 14-7 win over Meridian in the season opener.

“It is a big deal around here to be 2-0 after the first two weeks of the season,” Perrin head coach Brad Hutton said. “I am so proud of our kids. These kids play both ways, and they never let up.”

The Pirates are 2-0 despite youth in the middle of their defense. Perrin starts two sophomores at linebacker, Mason Bowland and Garrett Galliher, and a pair of sophomores at safety in Justin Francis and Chase Akin.

“Our young linebackers and safeties are playing very well,” Hutton said. “But we aren’t satisfied. We have a lot more work to do.”

The Pirates will try to extend their record to 3-0 on Friday at Saginaw Lake Country. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

Santo has outscored its first two opponents 102-8, defeating Meridian 40-0 last week and downing Ranger 62-8 in the opener.

Last week against Meridian, Grant Gilbert led the Wildcats’ offense with 136 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown, and Garrett Nemeth rushed four times for 91 yards and a score.

The ‘Cats also got great production form their quarterback, Kyle Moore, who threw a pair of TD passes and rushed for a score. The ‘Cats piled up 393 total yards.

“We played extremely well on both sides of the ball (against Meridian),” Santo head coach Randy Thornton said. “But (against Meridian) our defense set the tone early with physical play and sure tackling.

“The kids made plays on both sides of the ball and did an overall great job.”

The Wildcats hope to get to 3-0 at home on Friday when they host Dublin at 7:30 p.m.
