Pearcy advances to state meet

Lady Rams place 8th, Rams 14th at Region I-3A cross country meet

LUBBOCK – Mineral Wells junior runner Alex Pearcy placed ninth with a time of 12:15.9 Saturday morning at the Class 3A, Region I cross country meet at Mae Simmons Park to qualify as an individual for the state cross country meet.

It will be the first time Pearcy has advanced to the state meet. She had run at the regional meet the past two years.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals qualify for the state meet in Round Rock on Saturday, Nov. 9. The girls’ Class 3A meet will start at 10:40 a.m. at Old Settler’s Park.

“Alex got out in good position early and maintained that position,” MWHS coach Jackie Harvey said. “This is her third race out here and she is very familiar with the course.

“She ran very well, and she had a personal-best time. That’s not easy to do on a tough course like this.”

For the second year in a row, Mineral Wells High School qualified both of its cross country teams to the regional meet in Lubbock with hopes that at least one team  could take that extra step and make it to the state meet.

However, the Lady Rams, the two-time defending District 6-3A champions, fell just short in finishing eighth awhile the Rams placed 14th at the regional meet.

Other Lady Rams competing at the meet include Karessa Fowler (12:42.62), Katie Rivera (13:01.06), Yesenia Martinez (13:32.32), Natalie Ragland (13:52.02), Taylor Otwell (14:19.04) and Raeann River (14:28.43).

Preston Brooks led the Rams with a time of 16:58.1, with Juvaree Sutton crossing the finish line at 17:53.59. Other Rams competing include Keith Stafford (17:54.81), Sergio Velasquez (18:27.09) Curtis Allred (18:44.56), Everitt Jordan (18:54.7) and Elijiah Jefferson (21.01.59).
