Rams offense, Acosta peak in season finale

By CLINT FOSTER

KENNEDALE – Although this season may not have turned out how the Rams faithful may have hope, Mineral Wells has proven one thing all year long: “quit” is not in their vocabulary.

As many expected, the Kennedale Wildcats (6-4, 5-0) rode their potent rushing attack to a 66-34 victory over Mineral Wells (1-9, 1-4) under the Friday night lights at Wildcat Stadium.

With the win, the Wildcats secured a second-consecutive undefeated District 6-3A title and a trip to the postseason. What many likely didn’t expect is the Rams’ offense hitting its stride and scoring the most points of any district opponent against Kennedale this year.

Plagued by injuries, especially at running back, the Mineral Wells offense struggled to find consistency for most of the season before coming on strong in its final three games – two of which were against the districts top two teams.

Junior quarterback Caleb Acosta simply took control against the Cats, scoring every touchdown for the Rams. He was 14-for-30 through the air with 307 yards and two touchdowns and scored another three touchdowns on short runs. He threw two interceptions – one of which was returned 60 yards for a touchdown – but Acosta was still a primary reason why the Rams were able to stay competitive. It was easily his best statistical game of the season.

“Caleb had a good game,” Rams head coach Chuck Lawrence said. “He kept a lot of plays alive with his feet, and made some good throws.

“The left-handed screen pass (Acosta is right handed) was absolutely amazing.

“He made some things happen and had a really good game.”

Acosta spread the ball all around the field, with eight different players snagging at least one catch.

Senior Colby Kissinger was on the receiving end of both touchdown passes. He finished with four catches for 55 yards. Grant Peters led the Rams in receiving on two catches for 83 yards.
