FORT WORTH – For the first time in Mineral Wells High School history, the Lady Rams softball team has advanced to the regional quarterfinals after a convincing 16-4 victory over Hillsboro on Saturday at North Crowley High School to sweep the best-of-three area championships series two games to none.
The Lady Rams will face state-ranked No. 6 Burkburnett – which swept Gatesville, 6-0, 9-3 in an area championship series on Friday – in the third round.
Game one of the best-of-three regional quarterfinals series will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Kessler field on the campus of Mineral Wells High School.
Game two will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Burkburnett, with game three, if necessary, to follow game two.
On Saturday, the Lady Rams raced out to a 6-2 lead before adding 10 runs to put the game away. The contest was called after five innings due to run rule.
Hope Patterson led the Lady Rams at the plate with three doubles and six runs batted in.
Bethany Allen and Makayla Nance each drove in a pair of runs, with Reagan Patterson, Chandler Ortiz, Kelsey Keeton, Allie Stephens and Molly Clarke each recording an RBI.
Keeton was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run on nine hits with five strikeouts in four innings.
Stephens pitched the last frame, allowing an earned run on two hits.
The Lady Rams had taken a 1-0 series lead after a 16-6 victory on Friday. MWHS had fallen behind in the series opener, 6-1, before scoring 15 unanswered runs to seal the win.
In Friday’s win, the Lady Rams scored five runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings in a game called by run rule.
