HHCC hires former MWHS grad as new head pro

Ram Tracking ... By Jerry Hamilton

Tee Jay Burge, former MWHS golfer has been hired to oversee the golf operations at Holiday Hills Country Club.

Burge is a 1998 graduate of MWHS and a former member of the MWHS golf team.

Burge was elected to the PGA in 2010, but has been in the golf business since 2001. He was formerly the Head Golf Professional at The Club at Concan in Southwest Texas before accepting the head pro position at Holiday Hills.

Burge’s golf career began in 2001 when he took an assistant position at Forrest Creek golf club in Round Rock.

Burge moved up to first assistant at Lost Creek Country Club in Austin in 2006.

The game of golf was taught to Burge at a very young age by his father and grandfather.

They taught him well as Burge has posted a career low round of 61 at Austin Country Club.

His low round at HHCC is a 64.  Burge enjoys teaching players of all levels.

He especially likes being involved with a junior golf program.

His best finish in a South Texas PGA event was tied for 9th at a tournament at Royal Oaks Country Club in Houston.

Burge is very excited about returning to his home town.

“I am looking forward to meeting every golfer and working with the great staff here at HHCC.  Earon Gatlin does a great job running HHCC,” he said.

Burge is the son of the late Warren and JoLynn Burge. He has a five year old, Stacy Lynn Burge.  When not playing golf, Burge likes to fish and hunt.

With his experience and credentials, Burge should be a great asset to Mineral Wells and Holiday Hills Country Club. Welcome back, Tee Jay.

The key to the game of golf

Former dentist and 1960 graduate of Mineral Wells High School, has shot his age twice this summer.

Tom Key turned 71 a little over a year ago and then went out and shot an even par 71 at HHCC.

Later, Key shot another 71 after turning 72. Shooting your age is one of the most accomplished feats in golf.

It can be harder than pulling teeth.

Key still has length off the tee with a solid short game. I always wanted to shoot my age, but if I don’t turn 79 tomorrow my chances are slim. Congrats to Dr. Key.

One other who I remember shot his age many times up into his 80’s, was local dentist Ben Kirkpatrick. I once ask him how many times he had shot his age?  He responded by saying, “every time.”

Toys “fore” Tots cancelled

The Toys ‘fore” Tots annual tournament has been cancelled, but the club is still accepting unwrapped toys for local children.

For a $15 toy, Holiday Hills will provide the donor with a free round of golf to be used by April 30, 2014.

Call the pro shop at (940) 325-8403 for more information.

Hardin’s go low

Brothers Ricky and Randy Hardin of Santo had a couple of special days this past year at HHCC. Ricky shot his career low of 61 which included a bogey on number 18.

Randy shot his career low by five strokes with a 66.

The two brothers are among the five or six top players at HHCC.

Former Ram golfer named player of the year

Lonnie Alexander, a teaching pro at Onion Creek in Austin was named the South Texas PGA player of the year in 2010 and 2011.

Onion Creek Country Club hosted a Senior PGA event in the 80’s and early 90’s.

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

    By CLINT FOSTER

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
