Clash of high ranks: No. 4 Graford hosts No. 6 Throckmorton

By TONY EIERDAM

GRAFORD – There arguably is not a bigger game in Class A today when the state-ranked No. 4 Graford Jackrabbits host the No. 6 Throckmorton Greyhounds in a game that could be called a de facto District 11-A (Division II) championship game.

At least it is for the ‘Rabbits. Graford comes into the contest with an unblemished district mark, while Throckmorton’s lone league loss came to Graford in a 58-52 loss earlier this month at Throckmorton.

Should the ‘Rabbits win, they will have a two-game lead over Throckmorton with three games left on the district schedule. With Graford also holding the tiebreaker should they win today, the ‘Rabbits would almost be assured a district champion ship with a win.

A Jackrabbits’ loss would more than likely result in a tie for first place in the district when the league schedule is complete.

District tiebreaker procedures – a tiebreaker game or a coin flip – would then ensue.

The ‘Rabbits won the first meeting with defense, according to Graford head coach Ty Tabor.

“We threw a lot of different defenses out at them, and we held their leading scorer (Hayden Farquar) to 22 points when he had been averaging int eh 30s,” Tabor said. “Our defense put a lot of pressure on their offense.

“Defense won that game for us. We did not shoot the ball very well the first time we played them.”

Part of the reason for the lack of offense in the first meeting was the absence of Graford’s top three-point shooter, Tanner Hargrove, who missed the game because of an emergency appendectomy.

Tabor said Hargrove will be available today.

“Tanner will help us with our scoring, but in this game we will need everyone to play well offensively,” Tabor said. “We are averaging a little more than 80 points per game at home, and we would like to see this game with a score that gets up into the 70s or 80s, not in the 50s.

“We have to play better offensively than we did the first time we played them.”

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

    By CLINT FOSTER

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
