Two chances for titles

Lady Rams softball, Rams baseball can earn co-district championships with wins today at Kennedale

All Mineral Wells Lady Rams head softball coach David Tarver and Rams head baseball coach Bret Barrick wanted was a chance.

And now both will get their respective chances.

Both the Mineral Wells Lady Rams softball team and the Rams baseball team can clinch District 6-3A co-championships with wins today at Kennedale in the district finales.

Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Kennedale High School.

In the first meeting between the two softball teams, Kennedale outlasted the Lady Rams, 4-1, in a game where MWHS committed costly errors that led to unearned runs.

Tarver said the key to having a chance to defeat state-ranked No. 3 Kennedale is to play mistake-free softball.

“We need to stay in the game and handle the plays we can make,” Tarver said. “Obviously, we may get a bad break whether it be a play or a call or a lucky break on their part.

“We feel we will have to deal with some adversity, and we will need to overcome it.

“They are a good team and we are a good team, so we have to play our game and end out on top.”

Tarver said the Lady Rams’ playoff mind set began earlier in the week.

“A district championship is on the line, and our playoffs in our mind started Tuesday (with the win over Springtown that set up the opportunity to play today for a share of the district championship),” he said.

“We just don’t want to make the playoffs, we want to win a district championship, and that meant winning Tuesday and winning (today).

“Our playoff attitude started on Tuesday.”

The Rams fell 3-1 to the state-ranked No. 7 Wildcats earlier in district play.

Barrick said his team took it “a game at a time” in the second half of district play. That mind set created a four-game winning streak that gives the Rams a chance to share a title today.

“This is what we wanted, a chance to go to Kennedale and play for a share of the district championship,” he said. “We have won four district games in a row, and the kids have been stepping up.”

Barrick will go with his ace, all-state lefty Matt “Moose” Tincher. His lone loss this season on the hill was to Kennedale.

“Matt will have to pitch well and we are going to have to play good defense behind him,” Barrick said. “We also have to get some runs across the plate. I look for it to be a low-scoring game, but when we have opportunities we will need to find a way to move runners and get them across the plate by putting the ball in play.

“We didn’t do that the last time we played them, but we will have to take advantage of every opportunity (today).”

Rams notes: Should the Rams defeat Kennedale on Friday (see www.mineralwellsindex.com for results), a tiebreaker game for the district’s top seed in the playoffs – and the accompanying first-round bye – will be played at 11 a.m. Saturday at Weatherford College.

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.
