Area baseball, softball: Santo Wildcats begin push for first, Perrin Lady Pirates clinch third place

Mineral Wells Index

As the window of the regular season creeps ever closer to an end, teams all across the state are making the final push for the playoffs with a lucky few in hopes of improving their final playoff seed. Locally, the Santo Wildcats (9-6, 8-3) of the baseball diamond and Perrin-Whitt Lady Pirates (12-7, 6-4) softball team are no exception.

Santo Wildcats

Fresh off a 14-1 win over Ranger, Friday, the Wildcats extended their winning streak to three games with a 21-0 road win over Palo Pinto County rival Gordon, Monday.

Despite their best efforts not to run up the score, Santo was virtually unstoppable, posting 14 runs before before the game's first out. By the end of the second inning, the score was already 20-0, in favor of the 'Cats.

Dylan Swinney started on the hill for Santo and got credit for the win, moving his season record to 4-0 as the 'Cats' winningest pitcher this season. His 4.27 ERA was also helped by his shutout outing, in which he allowed no hits, two hit batters and six strikeouts over two innings of work.

The game situation allowed head coach Brandon Young to play freshman Keith Chalker in the third inning, whom Young said figures to factor into the Wildcats' baseball future in a big way.

In his single inning, Chalker was just about perfect, throwing three strikeouts to retire the side.

Junior Dylan Price closed out the game in the fourth.

The win further helped the 'Cats stay all alone at second in the District 10-1A standings, while Gordon fell to 2-9 and remained in seventh place.

With their next game at home against the undefeated Albany Lions, Saturday at 11 a.m., the 'Cats hope to extend their win streak and possibly make a push for first place if they can get some help from some other teams in District 10. Regardless, they look to be in a good spot heading into the Class 1A postseason.

Gordon next takes the diamond against the fifth-place Ranger Bulldogs in a road contest, Friday.

In other District 10 action, the Graford Jackrabbits secured their first district win of 2014 with a 14-11 upset over the third-place Baird Bears.

Perrin Lady Pirates

After downing Bryson, 15-3 on Friday, to punch their ticket to the playoffs, the Lady Pirates clinched third place in District 8-1A with a 6-4 loss on the road against 17th-ranked Archer City, Monday.

Haylee Fowler was the starting pitcher for Perrin and took the loss in her 21st start of the season.

The Lady Pirates' regular season finale is at home, Friday, against the Graford Lady Rabbits.

In baseball, Perrin fell to 4-17, 2-11 in district, with a 20-0 loss to Windthorst. Up next for the Pirates is their regular season finale against Petrolia, Friday.
